2022 Chamber Scholarship & Dinner

The Alger County Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce Munising-native Marissa Immel as the recipient of the 2022 Alger County Chamber of Commerce’s $500 Scholarship.

Marissa is finishing her first year as a master's student at Michigan State University, pursuing a degree in communicative sciences and disorders to become a speech-language pathologist.

"I am looking forward to working with a diverse population in a clinical setting and helping individuals find their voice," she said.

Scholarships are awarded annually to persons of any age and educational endeavor planning to attend an accredited higher education program/institution. The potential or current students may either be pursuing an undergraduate education or a graduate program and must be an Alger County resident with a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

In other news, this year’s Chamber dinner will take place Tuesday, May 3, at the Bear Trap along H-58 just outside of Munising. The theme is “caring for our community” with Munising Memorial Hospital being recognized as the business of the year.

First established in 1910 as a three-story red brick building built along Maple Street, the hospital and its staff has been instrumental in ensuring the safety, health, and welfare of our community for the past 112 years.

MMH became a nonprofit organization in 1947. The structure along Maple Street was replaced in 1961 when another facility opened along Sand Point Road. In 2008, that clinic was torn down and replaced by a new state of the art hospital, doubling the size of its previous emergency room, ambulance garage, medical offices, with equipment updated and services expanded as well.

As one of the largest employers in Alger County, MMH has over 90 staff members. In recent years, the hospital has done health fairs that were no cost to the community and has given monetary donations to organizations such as the Alger County Animal Shelter, 4-H, Valley Spur Kids Program, and Alger Community Food Pantry. Staff goes above and beyond but especially the last two years working the frontlines during the pandemic.

Social hour will begin at 5 p.m. with presentations at 6 p.m. and dinner to follow. Visit the Chamber’s office at 129 E. Munising Ave., Munising, or call (906) 387-2138 for ticket availability. There’ll be 50/50, door prizes, and a cash bar.
