The Alger County Chamber of Commerce recently welcomed two new members - The Munising Advisor and Munising Cannabis Company.

During its annual dinner on May 2, the Alger County Chamber of Commerce will honor Timbers Products as the 2022 Business of the Year. The celebration will be held at The Bear Trap Inn, which is located at the H-58 and H-15 junction roughly 12 miles east of Munising. Social hour begins at 5 p.m., with presentations at 6 p.m., and dinner to follow.

While tourism dollars fund the organization, the Munising Visitors Bureau makes a point of investing some of those resources back into the community.

Iverson Outdoors - a traditional snowshoe manufacturer founded over 60 years ago in the Munising area - continues to inspire people to seek wilderness in the beautiful Upper Peninsula.

“Tourism is an essential part of our local economy and employs many people in our small Northern town,” said Cori Ann Cearley, president of the Munising Visitors Bureau. “That being said, it is our job as stewards of our community to help educate people who visit on best practices and safety measures. If we are going to promote tourism, we need to also promote sustainability and safety as the two go hand in hand.”

While snowmobiling continues to be the most popular outdoor winter activity in the region, Alger County is home to some of the best trails used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the Upper Peninsula.

The Alger County Chamber of Commerce is once again running its Rekindle Grand Giveaway promotion, an initiative that was started with the hope of inspiring people to shop locally during the holiday season, until Thursday, Dec. 15.

The Women’s Center - which provides free resources to domestic and sexual assault victims in Alger and Marquette counties - held its year-end ask event at Gallery Coffee Company in downtown Munising on Nov. 10. Staff, board members and advocates were present to provide attendees information about the organization’s services, programs and fundraiser campaigns.

Known for its eclectic atmosphere and a menu that features local ingredients, Deb Molitor and Jeff Van Bremen recently sold the Brownstone Inn to Tom and Ana Dolaskie of Munising. While there’ll be a few basic changes, customers can still expect great service and a wonderful experience.

With summer now officially over and fall colors beginning to appear throughout Alger County, tourism has slowed down some which typically happens between Labor Day Weekend and the peak of the autumn season.

As hundreds of thousands of people flock to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore to relish in the natural sights every year – with over a million the last two, respectively - the Hiawatha National Forest offers miles of unmatched hiking areas for those interested in exploring paths less traveled.

The newest members of the Alger County Chamber of Commerce are Alley Cats, Au Train Grocery and Motel, Case Country Farm, Gallery Coffee Company and WQXO FM-AM.

Two larger Alger County events are celebrating anniversaries this year as the Grand Marais Music and Arts Festival turns 40 and the Munising Bay Cruisers’ Classic Car Show marks 10 years.
